Former Lake Clifton basketball star and Georgetown University standout Kevin Braswell died Monday at the age of 46 from undisclosed reasons.

Braswell was coaching in Japan for Utsunomiya Brex when he passed away, the team confirmed in a news release.

Officials with Utsunomiya said Braswell was hospitalized Jan. 17. The funeral and farewell ceremony will be held at the request of his family in the United States.

“We would like to express our deepest gratitude for the kindness shown to us during his lifetime and to announce this with great respect,” the statement reads. “Over the course of two seasons, Braswell devoted himself to the development of the club and made a great contribution to the growth of the team.

“We would like to express our heartfelt respect and gratitude for his achievements, and we would like to express our deepest condolences for his passion and dedication.”

At Lake Clifton, Braswell was named to the Baltimore Sun All-Metro team for three consecutive years. Current Lake Clifton coach Herman “Tree” Harried never coached Braswell in high school but did work with him at the AAU level the summer after his senior year.

“He was a vicious competitor,” Harried said in a phone interview with The Sun. “It is very sad. He was connected to Lake Clifton, and the number of calls I received just shows you the amount of love and respect people have for him.”

Braswell played one season for Maine Central Prep in Bangor before signing with Georgetown.

Braswell started all 128 games he played at Georgetown from 1998 to 2002, averaging 13.5 over his career. Braswell is ranked first all-time in program history with 695 assists and 349 steals. He also scored 1,735 points, which ranks 10th on the all-time list. Braswell was named to the All-Big East second team his junior year and made third team as a senior.

“Prayers to the family of Georgetown men’s basketball alum Kevin Braswell,” the Georgetown basketball program posted on social media. “He will be missed – forever a Hoya.”

The New Zealand Breakers of Australia’s National Basketball League, where Braswell played (2010) and coached (2018-19) also mourned his death in a statement.

“Today we mourn the passing of Breakers legend Kevin Braswell,” the Breakers said on the social media platform X. “KB, a former player, championship winner, 6th man of the year and head coach passed away over night. Our thoughts and aroha go out to his family at this time.”

Braswell returned to the U.S. in 2019 and completed his Georgetown degree. He served one season as an assistant coach at Coppin State.
