The first volume is scheduled for June 17.
“As a lover of history, I was drawn to W.E.B. Du Bois’s award-winning biography,” Vance said in a statement Wednesday. “Having the chance to reintroduce his legacy to audiophiles by narrating his life story has been an honor and true passion project for me.”
Lewis received Pulitzer Prizes for each of his Du Bois books: “W.E.B. Du Bois: Biography of a Race, 1868-1919,” published in 1993, and “W.E.B. Du Bois: The Fight for Equality and the American Century, 1919-1963,” which came out in 2000. The historian said he was gratified to have his books available in audio.
“I can hardly believe this has come to pass,” Lewis said. “Listen to Courtney B. Vance, and you shall hear the spoken wisdom of an American colossus, a prophetic man of color in whose 95 years all intellectual, political, economic and racial choices were profoundly explored.”
Legends team up for Queens Tour: Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Chaka Khan and Gladys Knight will join fellow Grammy winners Patti LaBelle and Stephanie Mills as headliners of the Queens Tour announced Tuesday by the Black Promoters Collective. Officially billed as “The Queens: Four Legends, One Stage,” the first leg of the tour will hit 11 cities in May and June, before picking up more dates this summer.
“Music is about connection, and this will be a celebration of the joy, power and love that it brings to us all,” Khan, 71, said. “Sharing the stage with my amazing sisters is an absolute honor.”
Mills promised an “electrifying” show. “Our different styles unite in love, compassion and understanding and it’s important to come together now,” said Mills, 67.
Latin Grammys makes changes: The Latin Grammys are getting closer to cinema and television with the new best music for visual media category.
The new category announced Wednesday will recognize original music for movies, TV shows, video games and other visual media. Projects must feature Latin rhythms or be composed by someone of Ibero American descent.
The Latin Grammys will also add a best roots song category. This award will go to the songwriters of new, unpublished recordings that reflect the traditions and roots of various communities, cultures or social groups, especially those of Hispanic American origin, whether in Spanish, Portuguese or Indigenous languages or dialects.
These and other changes by the Latin Recording Academy are immediate and will be effective for the ceremony in November.
