An alternative rock band that formed during the mid-1990s is speaking out after the White House allegedly used one of its songs in a social media post without the band’s permission.

The song in question is the 1998 hit “Closing Time” by Semisonic.

“We did not authorize or condone the White House’s use of our song ‘Closing Time’ in any way,” Semisonic wrote Monday on X. “And no, they didn’t ask. The song is about joy and possibilities and hope, and they have missed the point entirely.”

Earlier on Monday, the White House posted a video on social media, showing two migrants apparently in the process of being deported.

Both were shackled as Border Patrol agents frisked them before they were escorted on a plane and then, presumably, out of the U.S.

A portion of “Closing Time” is heard throughout the 17-second video.

“You don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here,” the video was captioned, which are lyrics to the song.

Reporters later asked White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt about the post during her weekly news conference. She quoted the lyrics, as well as defended President Donald Trump’s policies on immigration and deportation.

“Our entire government clearly is leaning into the message of this president,” she said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection shared the White House’s post on X.

“It’s closing time,” the agency noted. “We are making America safe again.”

“Closing Time” is from Semisonic’s 1998 album, “Feeling Strangely Fine,” which peaked at No. 43 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The song hit No. 4 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart and earned a Grammy nomination for best rock song.

Semisonic is among performers who have objected to Trump using their songs. They include the following bands and artists:

ABBA

Bruce Springsteen

Rihanna

Phil Collins

Pharrell

John Fogerty

Neil Young

Eddy Grant

Panic! at the Disco

R.E.M.

Guns N’ Roses

Celine Dion

Beyoncé

Adele
