Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could visit Washington again soon. President Donald Trump says he’s spoken with Netanyahu and a visit could come as early as next week.

“I think he’s going to be coming to our country sometime in the not-too-distant future,” Trump said. “We’ll speak about Israel, we’ll speak about what’s going on. That’s another thing we like to get solved. I think we will get it solved. But, I think he very well may be coming.”

Israel has not announced concrete plans for Netanyahu to return to Washington. The prime minister was the first foreign leader to visit Trump during his second term.

The president’s comments come as fighting continues in Gaza. Israel resumed its bombardment of the strip when ceasefire negotiations stalled last month. As for the future of Gaza, Netanyahu said this week Israel has plans to divide up Gaza and seize control of certain portions.

While Republicans remain largely united in their support for Israel, the war in Gaza remains a contentious and divisive issue for Democrats.

This week, 15 Democratic senators voted in favor of withholding billions of dollars worth of weapons sales and other military aid from Israel, an effort led by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. The measures failed.

“The Netanyahu government of Israel has killed more than 50,000 people in Gaza,“ Sanders said on Wednesday. “The United States must end our complicity in these atrocities. we cannot be part of this any longer.”

The Trump administration has moved forward on a $24 million arms sale to Israel. While it’s a relatively small transaction in the context of military deals, it’s notable because the Biden administration had delayed this sale over human rights concerns.
