PICTURING MARYLAND
Planting a greener future
Amy Davis/Staff
Taliyah Martin, 7, from left, Jeremiah Dixon, 14, Finesse Moore, 11, and Shareese Wood, 12, members of Turner Station Girl Scout Troop 353 and Boy Scout Troop 270, plant a dogwood in a green space at Henrietta Lacks Village. Martin said that she had never used a shovel before. The two trees planted by the Scouts are the last of 45 native trees planted in conjunction with the Maryland/DC chapter of the Nature Conservancy. In a series of workshops, the scouts learned about landscape architecture as they helped to redesign the community open space, which, in addition to trees, now has low, curving stone walls, insect sculptures and other playful elements.
