President Donald Trump is reportedly planning a military parade through the streets of Washington D.C.
Citing a “D.C. source with knowledge of the plan,” the Washington City Paper reported that Trump plans to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States with a grandiose show of force through the nation’s capital. The parade route will reportedly stretch nearly four miles from the Pentagon to the White House, and could include tanks and planes among other military assets.
Trump created a White House Task Force on Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday through an executive order he signed in late January. It reads in part:
“It is the policy of the United States, and a purpose of this order, to provide a grand celebration worthy of the momentous occasion of the 250th anniversary of American Independence on July 4, 2026. It is also the purpose of this order to take other actions to honor the history of our great Nation.”
Trump, chair of Task Force 250, reportedly first envisioned such a parade in 2017 when visiting French President Emmanuel Macron during his first term in office, according to the Associated Press. He reportedly expressed a desire to “try and top it” in the U.S. with a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue, which links the White House to the U.S. Capitol.
The Pentagon reportedly expressed concerns with Trump’s plan to involve tanks in the celebration, claiming the heavy vehicles could damage D.C.’s roads. The cost of such an event also reportedly presented a major hurdle for Trump, potentially reaching $30 million.
Trump, in his second term in the White House “won’t be denied,” the publication wrote.
Former Kentucky political candidate Amy McGrath slammed Trump over the reports in a post on X.
“This is what dictators do,” she wrote.
Neither Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser nor the White House responded to a request for comment.
