A school district employee will face multiple years in prison after she stole $1.5 million worth of chicken wings.

Vera Liddell, 68, was the food service director at Harvey School District 152 near Chicago during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to prosecutors. The school district shut down in accordance with the national quarantine, but according to WGN, the district continued sending meal kits to students.

Attorneys said that beginning in July of 2020, Liddell used a school cargo truck to steal the meal kits, and by February 2022, she had apparently accumulated $1.5 million in value.

Prosecutors said she was only caught when the school district realized they had gone $300,000 over budget before the school year had even ended.

According to ABC7 Chicago, Liddell was charged with theft and operating a criminal enterprise in 2022. She has taken a guilty plea and received a sentence of nine years.
