Falcons (8-7) at Commanders (10-5)

When: 8:20 p.m. EST Sunday

TV: NBC

BetMGM NFL odds: Commanders by 4

Series record: Washington leads 18-10-1

Last meeting: Commanders beat Falcons 24-16 on Oct. 15, 2023, at Atlanta.

Last week: Falcons beat Giants 34-7; Commanders beat Eagles 36-33.

Falcons player to watch: Rookie QB Michael Penix Jr. made his first NFL start in easy mode at home against the Giants. The difficulty level rachets up at Washington, and the Commanders have a legitimate pass rush led by Dante Fowler Jr. Penix can rely on Bijan Robinson again, but may need to make some harder throws to get the job done this time.

Commanders player to watch: RB Brian Robinson Jr. fumbled twice against Philadelphia and has just one touchdown over the past four games. Daniels put the Commanders on his back last weekend working out of empty formations often, but Kliff Kingsbury’s offense is predicated on running the ball to set up the pass and Austin Ekeler remains on injured reserve because of a concussion, so it’s Robinson’s show on the ground.

Key matchup: Commanders rookie QB Jayden Daniels vs. the Falcons’ pass defense. Atlanta returned two interceptions for a touchdown and forced Drew Lock to fumble last week. Daniels is coming off throwing five TD passes to rally Washington and end Philadelphia’s winning streak at 10 games. Prime time has not fazed Daniels so far, and it’s worth wondering what his next trick will be.

Series notes: Washington has won the past three meetings. These teams are playing for a fourth consecutive season. ... This is the first prime-time game in NFL history between two rookie QBs selected in the first round. Daniels was the No. 2 pick and Penix No. 8. ... The Falcons benched former Washington QB Kirk Cousins, a 2012 fourth-rounder, before Week 16 in favor of Penix.

New England’s offense is coming off one of its best starts of the season last week, jumping to a 14-0 lead over Buffalo. But the Patriots have scored 20 or more points in six of their 15 games.

Series notes: The Chargers and Patriots will meet in Foxborough for the second straight season. Last season, Los Angles ended a seven-game losing streak to New England. The Patriots won 10 consecutive games against the Chargers from Dec. 2, 1973, through Oct. 14, 2001.

Last week: Cardinals lost to Carolina 36-30, OT; Rams beat New York Jets 19-9.

Los Angeles had no answers for Murray in September as he threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns without an interception and added 59 yards rushing. But their defensive front is much more cohesive than it was in the second week of the season, with rookies Jared Verse and Braden Fiske proving to be menaces in the backfield.

Last week: Colts beats Titans 38-30; Giants lost to Falcons 34-7.

Key matchup: Indianapolis broke a 68-year-old franchise record by rushing for 335 yards against the Titans. Look for the Colts to keep running the ball. Despite losing tackle Dexter Lawrence and linebacker Bobby Okereke to season-ending injuries last month, New York’s run defense has gotten better with Elijah Chatman, Jordon Riley and Elijah Garcia in the middle. The Giants held Derrick Henry of the Ravens to 67 yards two weeks ago and Bijan Robinson of the Falcons to 94 last weekend.

Series notes: The Colts had won four straight until the Giants snapped the streak in the 2022 season. The teams have met twice in the playoffs, with the Colts winning both. The most memorable game was the 1958 championship game which Baltimore won 23-17 in overtime on Alan Ameche’s 1-yard run.
