Progressives in “varying positions of influence” are preparing for “unrest” in the event former President Donald Trump wins the November election, according to a Wall Street Journal report published Monday.
Danielle Deiseroth, executive director of the self-described progressive think tank Data for Progress, reportedly told the newspaper she has been discussing with leaders of progressive nonprofit organizations how to resist a victory by Trump. Deiseroth believes progressives would view Democratic governors as “political torchbearers” and hope Democratic attorneys general would resist initiatives by the former president, The Wall Street Journal noted.
Vanessa Wruble, who says she is a co-founder of the 2017 Women’s March in Washington, D.C., thinks marching to protest Trump is feeble, according to the newspaper.
“I wish I could say, ‘Oh, we can join together and do this, that and the other thing.’ But I think the problem is we don’t know how to be effective,” Wruble reportedly said.
Gabe Tobias, who The Wall Street Journal calls a political strategist, hopes the goal for people against Trump would be to minimize any “damage” by the former president, according to the report.
One of the people who protested against Trump’s victory in the 2016 election plans to focus on “tangible” actions, like protecting reproductive rights, should he win again, the newspaper said.
Some protests against Trump’s 2016 victory involved violence. In Portland, Oregon, some people damaged property and burned garbage, according to the BBC.
Four years later, some of Trump’s supporters broke into the Capitol after he lost the 2020 election to then-former Vice President Joe Biden. Multiple people died in connection to the riots.
Erin Miller, chief of global programs for the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project, which collects information on violence, reportedly told The Wall Street Journal a victory by Trump next week would not result in an uprising. The newspaper quoted her as saying the result would not be a “shock” this year.
