Getting swept by the Yankees the way the Orioles did over the weekend had to be frustrating.

Whatever pent-up emotion the team came home with after their playoff hopes were dashed in New York was let out rather loudly.

Using a nine-run third inning that featured home runs by DJ Stewart, Ryan Mountcastle and José Iglesias, the Orioles enjoyed their biggest win of the season in stomping the Atlanta Braves, 14-1, on Monday night at Camden Yards, ending a five-game losing streak.

The Orioles entered Monday having scored just three runs over their past four games. With the offensive explosion, they became the first team in American League history to score one run or less in four straight games, then score 14 or more in their next game, according to Stats Perform.

Mountcastle contributed a run-scoring single in the first inning before the Orioles offense broke out in earnest in the third inning off starter Touki Toussant. Cedric Mullins walked, stole second and was at third base after a single by Iglesias before Stewart put his seventh home run of the season onto the right field flag court.

Two pitches later, Mountcastle hit a missile to center field for his fifth home run of the season. The Orioles (21-26) turned the lineup over after the bases were cleared, and two men were on for Iglesias, who turned on a 2-0 fastball from Luke Jackson for his first home run of the season.

It was the first time the Orioles scored nine runs in an inning since April 15, 2016, against the Texas Rangers.

That trio of Iglesias, Stewart, and Mountcastle each added run-scoring singles in the Orioles’ three-run fifth inning as well.

Iglesias, who is dealing with a quadriceps injury that has limited him all year, left after the fifth inning with four hits in four at-bats. Mountcastle had three hits, while Stewart and Mullins had two apiece.

Longest start of season

Jorge López didn’t need to be as effective as he was considering the margin, but the rotation newcomer was as good as he’s been in an Orioles uniform Monday.

López scattered five hits and kept the Braves off the board until a leadoff home run by Freddie Freeman in the sixth inning. He became the first Orioles starter this season to complete seven innings, and did so striking out three against two walks.

In four starts since joining the Orioles rotation, López has a 3.80 ERA.

Cole Sulser, who hadn’t pitched since Sept. 6, contributed a scoreless eighth inning before Carson Fulmer pitched the ninth.

Oh no, Nick

Former Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis was a tough act to follow in right field at Camden Yards after he left as a free agent to join the Braves after the 2014 season. He had a moment to forget out in his old stomping grounds beneath the out-of-town scoreboard Monday.

Pat Valaika, who entered the game for Iglesias as a substitute, hit a drive to the warning track that Markakis got under but had bounce out of his glove and over the fence for a home run.
