Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, is living in an assisted-living facility after not casting a vote on the House floor over the past six months, The Dallas Express has reported.
Taylor Manziel, the assistant executive director of the facility, told the outlet Granger lives there, according to a video published in the report on Friday.
“This is her home,” he said. Granger has been in Congress since 1997 after serving as the mayor of Fort Worth.
Granger’s son, Brandon Granger, told the Dallas Morning News over the weekend that his mother is living at Tradition Senior Living in Fort Worth and is not in memory care. He also said she has been having “dementia issues.”
According to its website, The Daily Express is “a general interest daily news source covering events, activities and citizens of the city of Dallas and Dallas County.” It was founded in 2021.
At least two employees told The Dallas Express the 81-year-old congresswoman lives at the facility. The outlet said it received a tip from one of Granger’s constituents, who shared the lawmaker was residing in the facility “for some time” after she was found “wandering lost and confused” in a Fort Worth neighborhood.
The outlet noted it visited Granger’s office and found the door locked with the glass covered. There was nobody inside the office, the story said.
The Dallas Express asked workers in the building Granger’s office is in “what happened” to the space. The employees said the congresswoman’s team “packed up” and closed the office before Thanksgiving, the report said.
“Her office appears to be closed for good (she is retiring at the end of the session) with phone calls going unanswered and voice mails not returned,” the report reads.
Granger’s office did not return a request for comment on Monday. Granger, who did not run for reelection this year, has not voted on any measures from the House floor since July.
Tarrant County Republican Party Chairman Bo French told The Dallas Express a lack of representation for Granger’s district is “troubling to say the least.”
“At a time when extraordinarily important votes are happening, including debt ceiling, disaster relief, farm bills and border issues, Kay Granger is nowhere to be found,” he was quoted as saying. “The margin in Congress is razor thin and the lack of a Republican vote representing CD-12 disenfranchises 2 million people. We deserve better.”
Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., commented on the news on social media, calling for term limits for federal legislators, writing:
“Kay Granger’s long absence reveals the problem with a Congress that rewards seniority & relationships more than merit & ideas. We have a sclerotic gerontocracy,” Khanna wrote. “We need term limits. We need to get big money out of politics so a new generation of Americans can run and serve.”
