The U.S. Marshals Service has joined the search for a suspect wanted in connection to an armed robbery in downtown Baltimore.
Joyce Thompson, 34, is facing nearly two dozen criminal counts including felony armed robbery and felony assault.
According to charging documents, Thompson and two male suspects are accused of robbing two juveniles at gunpoint in downtown Baltimore in September.
On a September afternoon, Baltimore Police officers responded to 211 East Baltimore St. to a report of an armed robbery. There, investigators said the officers were met by a 16-year-old male and a 15-year-old female. The teens reported to police that a vehicle pulled up in front of them as they were standing on the street, and three suspects exited the car.
They told officers the female suspect snatched the female victim’s cell phone from her hands. And when she attempted to get it back, one of the male suspects revealed a handgun in his waistband, according to the statement of charges. They reported the other male suspect was also armed.
The two were not hurt, and contacted police after the suspects fled with the female victim’s property, investigators said.
Once there, investigators said responding officers located and obtained closed circuit video footage of the suspects, as well as gather key information about the getaway vehicle.
“Law enforcement can access electronic devices installed across the City that detect the characters on a license plate,” explained Al Maresca, of the US Marshals Service. “They will use that information to ultimately determine who is the registered owner of the vehicle.”
According to charging documents, the vehicle was tracked back to a local car rental dealership where detectives responded and obtained additional video footage. The vehicle was then located the next day, seized and processed for evidence.
The vehicle was processed, and three sets of prints were recovered, including that of Joyce Thompson, according to court documents.
Investigators said detectives compared the video footage from both scenes, as well as information previously gathered on Thompson, to name her one of the suspects in the armed robbery. A warrant was issued for Thompson’s arrest.
According to charging documents, one of the two male suspects has already been arrested and charged in the case while the other male suspect has yet to be identified. Meanwhile, the U.S. Marshals Service has joined the search for Thompson.
Online court records indicate just a few months before the armed robbery Thompson had another warrant issued for her arrest for failing to appear in court. The case is related to a 2021 drug possession charge.
“All information indicates these victims were just minors walking down the street, minding their own business,” said Maresca. “Any time you have a fugitive that is allegedly involved in violent criminal activity, it presents a threat to community safety.”
Thompson stands at approximately 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs about 140 pounds.
Anyone with information concerning Thompson’s whereabouts is asked to contact the U.S. Marshals Service at 202-819-5058.
