A Laurel man who evaded authorities for over 18 months was apprehended in Baltimore on Thursday and charged with murder in a roadside killing, according to the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
Christopher Rojas, 27, was identified by police as a suspect less than a week after Antwaun Conyers was shot and killed Feb. 8, 2023, alongside a roadway in Laurel. Another defendant, Rakyia Talley, was arrested two days after Conyers’ death and pleaded guilty in December as an accessory. She was sentenced to five years supervised probation and released from jail, court records show.
The first 18 months of Talley’s probation, which began in February, will include house arrest.
An arrest warrant for Rojas was filed the same month Conyers was killed and on Thursday, members of the Anne Arundel County Police Fugitive Apprehension Team found him in Baltimore, according to a news release.
Police said Rojas was charged with first- and second-degree murder, as well as multiple assault and weapons violations. Court records show the public defender’s office has been assigned to the case and a bail hearing will take place Friday afternoon at Glen Burnie District Court.
According to charging documents, on the morning of Feb. 8, 2023, officers and paramedics found Conyers beside Russett Green East suffering from at least one gunshot wound. There were multiple cartridge cases on the ground near him, police said.
Video surveillance footage obtained by detectives showed Conyers walking along the street when a gray Nissan Altima stopped beside him. A witness told police they saw a man step out of the vehicle and shoot Conyers with a handgun.
From the video, police were able to pair the vehicle with Talley, a “close personal associate” of Rojas’, according to charging documents.
The day before Conyers’ death, police met with Rojas near Russett Green East after he reported his car being stolen. Talley was with Rojas when he accused someone matching Conyers’ description of the theft, police said.
The next morning, 10 minutes before the shooting occurred, Rojas and Talley were spotted at an unnamed business in the area. Rojas had found his car, police said, saw Conyers walking nearby and said he was going to shoot him.
Conyers was killed less than six minutes later and less than 300 meters (about 984 feet) from the business, according to charging documents.
Conyers, a New Carrolton resident, was 32.
