The Delivering on Government Efficiency subcommittee, designed to work with the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, is scheduled to hold a hearing Wednesday examining how foreign aid has “undermined” U.S. interests.
The hearing, titled “America Last: How Foreign Aid Undermined U.S. Interests Around the World,” was announced Friday by the House Oversight Committee. Subcommittee members during the hearing will attempt to “expose egregious foreign aid spending that has undermined U.S. interests, review proposed reforms, and aid the Trump Administration’s efforts to rein in America’s bloated bureaucracy,” according to a news release.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., chairwoman of the subcommittee, said in a statement the hearing comes as Americans are “shocked” to discover how “their taxpayer dollars have been spent overseas.”
“What the DOGE team has uncovered with [the U.S. Agency for International Development] is shocking, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg,” Greene said. “For decades now, the federal government has been sending billions after billions of dollars to push left-wing ideology, fund radical extremist groups, and usurp the will of the people abroad and here at home.
“Our DOGE subcommittee hearing will expose the agenda that you’ve been funding and offer solutions to prevent it from ever happening again.”
The subcommittee held its first hearing earlier this month, during which Democratic members raised concerns over Musk’s DOGE role. Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M., called on Musk, who was not present at the hearing, to testify before the subcommittee.
“Come and testify in front of the American people under oath because we want to know what you’re up to,” Stansbury said.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, also spoke against Musk, telling her subcommittee colleagues that while others viewed TikTok as a security threat, she’s “upset about the guy that runs Twitter.”
“We’re talking about someone who’s unelected, unvetted and definitely unconfirmed that is now literarily sitting atop our $6 trillion, and we don’t know what it is that he’s doing, and we honestly don’t know what role he has,” Crockett said.
DOGE last week reported via its website the presidential advisory committee has saved the federal government an estimated $55 billion thus far. President Donald Trump last week also floated the idea of sending 20% of DOGE savings to taxpayers, while directing another 20% toward combating the national debt.
The idea followed a social media exchange between Musk and James Fishback, CEO of investment firm Azoria, who posted an outline to X of such a plan.
