Ducks forward Antoine Vermette was suspended for 10 games Thursday for slashing a linesman after a faceoff.

Vermette slapped his stick against the back of linesman Shandor Alphonso’s legs after losing a faceoff in the third period of the Ducks’ 1-0 win over the Wild on Tuesday.

After a disciplinary conference call Wednesday, the NHL issued the automatic 10-game suspension for applying physical force to an official without intent to injure.

The normally mild-mannered Vermette appeared to act in frustration after Alphonso dropped the puck before the forward had put his stick in place on the ice.

Sidney Crosby became the 86th player in NHL history to surpass 1,000 points in the Penguins’ 4-3 win over the Jets. Crosby reached 1,000 with his assist on Chris Kunitz’s first-period goal, then assisted on Phil Kessel’s tying goal in the third and won it with a goal with 21 seconds left in overtime. ...
