Martin Havlat announced his retirement Wednesday.

Nicknamed “Mach 9” for his skating prowess, the 35-year-old Czech native finished with 594 points in 790 career games over 14 seasons. He played for the Senators, Blackhawks, Wild, Sharks, Devils and Blues.

Havlat most recently played two games for the Blues last season before leaving the team for personal reasons.

A first-round pick of the Senators in 1999, Havlat was a Calder Trophy finalist in 2001-02 and helped the Senators win the Presidents' Trophy in 2001-02. In 75 playoff games, he had 21 goals and 31 assists.

Hurricanes winger Bryan Bickell told NHL.com that he's close to returning to the lineup. Bickell was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in November. He said he's targeting a return sometime during the Hurricanes' five-game homestand that begins Feb. 17. Bickell, 30, was traded by the Blackhawks to the Hurricanes during the summer and hasn't played since Oct. 30. He has been practicing with the Hurricanes. News services
