Tar Heels upset No. 1 Fighting Irish, 17-15
Cousins help North Carolina men earn comeback win; Albany edges Yale in OT
Stephen Kelly (Calvert Hall) scored the go-ahead goal and cousin Patrick Kelly (Calvert Hall) added one for insurance to help the No. 13 North Carolina men's lacrosse team complete a comeback and upset No. 1 Notre Dame, 17-15, on Saturday.
The host Tar Heels (8-5, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) trailed the Fighting Irish 10-5 with 10 minutes left. Stephen Kelly scored with 2:50 left, and Patrick Kelly scored with 1:49 remaining.
Notre Dame (9-2, 3-1) broke an 8-all tie with a 6-1 run in the third quarter. Sergio Perkovic finished with four goals, and Mikey Wynne (St. Paul's) had three.
“We don't play a whole lot of 17-15 games, and there's a reason for that,” Notre Dame coach Kevin Corrigan said. “That's not the way we play. We gave away too many plays in the course of the game to feel good about it. We made too many mental errors in a lot of different situations, and we didn't get stops when we needed them.”
Brendan Bomberry had three goals, and Maryland transfer Connor Cannizzaro added two goals and two assists for the Pioneers.
Brown had 11 goal scorers, including four with hat tricks.
Riorden finished with 14 saves, and Oakes had four goals. Yale scored twice over the final 3:47 to force overtime.
Andrew Tien had a hat trick and Chris Walsch (Gilman) had a goal and two assists for the Falcons (12-2, 6-0).
Ela Hazar and Aly Messinger scored three goals each for North Carolina, which won its 10th straight game and earned the ACC regular-season championship.
Kyra Harney scored three goals and Kelci Smesko had two goals and an assist for Duke.
Treanor, who ranks second in the nation in draw controls per game, had 12 against the national leader, Louisville's Kaylin Morissette, who had four.
Olivia Hompe scored four goals and Ellie DeGarmo (Bryn Mawr) made 10 saves for Princeton.
Penn started the game with a 5-0 run, but Yale tied the game at 6 with 16:17 remaining. The Quakers then scored three straight and held on for the victory.
Madison Cyr (Winters Mill), Katie O'Donnell and Madison Carter (South River) each scored four goals, Steph Lazo (St. Mary's) had a hat trick and Jenna Mosketti (Fallston) added two goals for Penn State.
