As Joann Fabrics declares bankruptcy and closes all physical store locations, scammers are capitalizing on the situation by creating fake “going out of business” and liquidation websites.
Double-check the website you’re on before checking out your cart online.
Fraudulent sites mimic the official Joann website, complete with logos and images, offering merchandise at steep discounts of 80-90%, according to the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
The situation has escalated and Joann Fabrics has posted a notice on its website.
BBB, the consumer protection website, issued a scam alert, warning consumers to be vigilant. Many have reported these scams to the BBB Scam Tracker.
One person shared their experience with the BBB, “We saw an ad for Joann Fabrics ‘bankruptcy’ going-out-of-business sale, which led to a website advertising 80-90% off various items. We selected a dozen items in a shopping cart and then noticed an additional ‘promotional discount’ added. At that point, we noticed the website name was not Joann’s real website, compared the two online, and shut down the fake website without providing any information.”
To avoid falling victim to these scams, the BBB advises consumers to confirm the website’s URL, avoid clicking on ad links, be wary of deals that sound too good to be true and use credit cards for online purchases. Joann’s official website is joann.com, and any deviation from this URL could indicate a fraudulent site.
